Divorce is always complicated. No two cases are the same but having an experienced attorney with diverse perspectives can help you sleep easier through a stressful and often painful process.
That’s exactly what the Burke McClasky Stevens law firm in Corporate Woods specialize in. They have three multi-talented attorneys with over 50 years combined experience who know how to help their clients through one of the most difficult times in their lives.
After a decade with another firm, attorney Anne Burke decided to start her own practice. Two other family law attorneys, Jace McClasky and Shea Stevens, also shared the same vision, and last spring joined forces to open a new firm.
The partners have a broad range of experience and skill sets, which Burke believes is an asset to all their clients.
Burke started her career 30 years ago as a commercial warranty defense litigator, but soon realized it wasn’t the right fit for her.
“I’m a people person, and I found that companies don’t give you a big hug after you win their case,” said Burke. “Family law is client-oriented, and our team enjoys the 1-on-1 interaction of helping people through a difficult time in their lives.”
Today, Burke works on high net worth divorce litigation, such as evaluating and dividing businesses and commercial real estate worth millions of dollars. She has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 1995, named KC Magazine’s “Super Lawyer” and is a fellow in the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyer. She also frequently speaks and writes about legal issues of divorce.
In his family law work, McClasky specializes in mediation and prenuptial agreements. In 2013, he was selected to Best Lawyers in America for Family Law, and named a Rising Star in KC Magazine’s “Super Lawyer” section.
Stevens has over eight years experience in family law and focuses on issues such as divorce, custody, child support, maintenance, and prenuptial and postnuptial agreements. In fact, she was recently recognized as “Best of the Bar” (KC Business Journal) and Rising Star (KS & MO Superlawyer).
“We collaborate with each other and have a shared vision of how we want to treat our clients and other attorneys,” said Burke. “Our focus is on building relationships so we can serve them well, rather than a high volume practice where we can’t even return phone calls within a day or two.”
According to Burke, family law has evolved a great deal since she started practicing 30 years ago. Issues such as same-sex marriage and complex finances have muddied the waters. She also cites the “graying of divorce,” where couples divorce in their 50s or 60s after a long marriage, as a major challenge for attorneys today.
“Many couples have built a financial life around retiring together, and suddenly have to figure out how to retire apart,” said Burke. “It’s tough to deliver bad news to those clients, such as telling them they don’t have enough net worth to retire or have to sell a house they’ve been living in for a long time.”
Burke previously worked at another firm in Corporate Woods and knew immediately this is where she wanted her new firm’s home to be.
“We love being at Corporate Woods, and the sheer beauty of it is hard to beat,” said Burke. “Everyone from Stoltz was helpful in getting us going, and it was obvious they wanted us to be happy and successful here.”
According to Burke, family law is booming in Kansas City, and she hopes to eventually add a partner or two to the firm. For the time being, she said the firm is focused on helping their clients through a difficult experience.
“We know our clients are going through the worst time of their life, and we want to treat them with dignity and respect,” said Burke. “Divorce can be messy, and we try not to make it messier than it has to be.”
