If you want to know the secret ingredient to building a successful (and fun) staffing firm, you should ask the women behind Staffing Kansas City. They seem to have discovered it!
President Shelley Seibolt and Vice President Roses Ammon began working together at a staffing firm in 1992. The firm was soon sold and changes made by the new owner did not sit well with them.
Discouraged by the direction of the business, they took matters into their own hands. The women put in their notice and started Staffing Kansas City in 1998. One of their first steps was to sublet from All About Travel located in the Shops of Corporate Woods and work out of their back conference room until they moved out.
They never looked back.
“We knew we wanted to be in Kansas and that things would continue to develop out south,” says Ammon. “We love Corporate Woods and hope to never move.”
Staffing Kansas City helps small to mid-sized companies who don’t have large human resource teams find the right employees. The business is comprised of five women who work hard to meet their clients’ needs.
“People often get confused. We don’t work for the candidates. Our clients, companies, retain our services to find the employees they need and want. We then find a person that fits their requested experience and company’s culture,” says Ammon.
According to Ammon, the firm is successful at placing many of the candidates brought in, well over industry standard. Their proprietary software streamlines processes to make them efficient. Ammon says, “We are small but mighty.” Their work has caught the eye of others and brought them well-deserved acclaim.
In fact, the firm recently won the prestigious 2015 Kansas Women-Owned Business of the Year Award from the Kansas Department of Commerce and have been named one of Thinking Bigger Business’, 25 Under 25, Class of 2016.
So what is the secret ingredient to their success? Ammon says “it is simple.”
“We hire good people and there is a great deal of loyalty,” says Ammon. “Our clients from the start are still our clients today. They trust us with their hiring needs.”
“We don’t have competition from within, which few other staffing firms can claim. We work together as a team,” says Ammon. “We pay our people well and it’s a great working environment. We don’t have turnover in our office. We have created a fun, yet hard working culture.
Corporate Woods has been a major factor in their team’s culture and success. Ammon points out the front glass windows and foot traffic are huge advantages of their location.
“Clients just drop in and we love to buy them coffee. I can’t think of another high-end office park that rivals Corporate Woods.”
“A friend of ours told us when we first started Staffing Kansas City, ‘Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered.’ That stuck with us. We have the same billable mark-up rate we had in 1992. We work hard, have fun and provide for our families.”
